What is Workplace Mediation?

Workplace mediation is helping two people re-establish an effective working relationship. If there are more than two people involved, see Organisational Mediation. If one of you is looking to enforce your rights, Dispute Mediation may be more relevant.

People work best when they are able to be open and honest with each other about their feelings and views and understand each other’s aims and motivation. Most breakdowns in working relationships stem from miscommunication. Rapproche can promote open lines of communication so that the people involved can appreciate what is really happening between them and in their working lives. Once this stage is reached, they can make informed decisions about how best to resolve the issue and move forward in a collaborative way.

The process typically involves the mediator meeting each person separately and then being present at a meeting between the two in which they are able to express themselves and be heard. From this meeting each person is usually able to separate the myths about their relationship from the realities. They begin to understand each other’s aims and so can find explanations for past behaviours.
